Lopes, Orr, Jacobson Are Out

Those changes at Heritage Hall have begun, according to multiple people familiar with the situation who were not authorized to speak publicly. Three of USC’s most senior officials in the athletic department are out, including Steve Lopes, the CFO and COO, who’d long been considered second in command.

Their removals stem in part from concerns over recent turmoil, including the “Varsity Blues” admissions scandal, The Times has learned. One department official, Donna Heinel, was indicted on federal bribery charges last year.

Ron Orr, a senior associate athletic director who led the Trojan Athletic Fund, is also out, along with associate athletic director Scott Jacobson, who also worked in development and fundraising.

The moves also come in part because of the desire of new athletic department leadership to bring in its own people.

Lopes’ exit, after 35 years in the department, sends a clear message of change at the start of a new era for Trojan athletics. Under USC’s previous three directors, Lopes played a major role in determining the direction of the department.

When Pat Haden left in 2016, Lopes was seen as one of the leading candidates to replace him as athletic director.

Orr, a former All-American swimmer at USC, had been with the athletic department just as long as Lopes. He was promoted to senior associate athletic director in 2010, tasked with taking care of the Trojan Athletic Fund, the fundraising arm of the department.

My youngest son had a baseball scholarship to Hawaii Pacific University in Honolulu years ago. He was there for 2 years. Honolulu is a great place to live if you make enough money. UH football is big on the island but not big enough to get sell out crowds or to attract 5 star and 4 star recruits to get you a chance to win Natties. GH’s wife and family love the beaches here in So Cal and it beats anywhere in Texas IMHO. The beaches and life style in Honolulu would be cool for them too but if he… Read more »

I heard that Orr is out because he knew too much about the athletic department scandal. Right or wrong, Folt is cleaning house. If Graham Harrell leaves for a HC position, that would be the nail in the coffin for SC in 2020 & 2021. The pure fact that Helton has yet to name a DC, tells me that good candidates don’t want to work with him. Helton just doesn’t have the mental tools to run a successful program; even though we have a stacked roster. This program is so very frustrating. It’s like owning an “State of the Art”… Read more »

I am sure that Helton can be the DC just fine. Hell he can even take care of special teams because he is so special.

If only Bohn was his own man and not Folts yes man I would say this is a good thing. But what he has shown us is that she will tell him who to hire and I hope I am wrong, but it will be the worst possible people we can imagine.

Steveg, that is my first thought, as well. This will only serve to make the Athletic Department weaker. Orr and Lopes remembered when SC stood for excellence, not the clown circus it has evolved into under the last two and current presidents.

So happy the lopes and orr are out, just wish tessalone was included as well. Sorry to see Jacobson go, especially in a public way where his name is associated with the above mentioned POS’s. Next folt (since she’s really the AD) needs to cancel the uc davis game and then make plans to hire a real football coach for 2021.

I wouldn’t mind clearing everyone out, if they showed by their actions that they were really intent on improving things Keeping Helton proves otherwise.

Well, finally some good news out of HH. I still want to see Tim Tessalone hung by his toes (“uhum I meant hung out to dry”. That would be very satisfying. I give Bohn credit for this one but it comes no where close to making up for retaining CCH. However, I am concerned who their replacements may by. Folt is known to bring in her kind of people, and I don’t care for her kind of people.

I am with you Scipio, she will being in social justice warriors, mostly women I bet, and liberal academic types with little knowledge of sports. The final straw.

But at least it will be more “diverse” or “inclusive”

That’s my biggest fear. Her “people” have scary political aspirations that have nothing but negative effects for the football program.
