Bottom line is the defense needs to be so simple so that any player on the depth chart can step in and have success. The good teams like Alabama have defensive schemes that are able to stop the opponent and use lots of players on the depth chart. That is what we need to do.

How “complex” can defensive football be?– “Hey guys, stop the run, and if it is a pass, then get the quarterback. The rest of you go for the interception.”

I was thinking the same thing. What are they confused about? What is unclear? How can the uncertainty last an entire season? This should not be a problem with a competent coaching staff.

Not only does Clancy need to demand his defense to get stronger over the summer and step up its physicality, he needs to get more defensive players into the game the 1st 3-quarters so the defense isn’t spent in the 4th quarter, never mind the simplicity issue.

The two issues are related. If the system is complex, then fewer kids master it and hence fewer play.

Rjj – I think you and I both agree Clancy is not going to play more guys and his system will not be simpler, it is all a smokescreen. This is the kind of talk I cannot listen to during spring, most of it is bs.
