Helton Still Hanging By a Thread?

Ryan Kartje (LA Times)  —  Clay Helton remains USC’s head football coach for now, in spite of a report suggesting otherwise.

Multiple people familiar with the situation confirmed to The Times that no decision has yet been made on the embattled Trojans coach. But the fact that Helton’s status has yet to change, following the official conclusion of the regular season on Saturday, does not mean that Helton is officially safe.

A report from Sports Illustrated on Sunday morning first suggested that Helton had already been fired. But that report has since been refuted by USC, as well as by other outlets, including another reporter from Sports Illustrated.

USC assistant athletic director and director of player development Gavin Morris noted on Twitter that the reporter was “just making stuff up.”

“It’s that season of, let’s just make stuff up,” Morris wrote.

New USC athletic director Mike Bohn was not even in Los Angeles when the report first surfaced.

Bohn, who was hired last month, is expected to make a decision on Helton, one way or the other, in the coming days. When Bohn spoke to The Times less than two weeks ago, he said that a decision on Helton was “something we don’t want to race into.”

Well here in NY a few years ago the Mets bought out David Wrights last contract year ( believed to be 20+ million ). I remember Wright saying in a later interview the negotiation took 10-12 days .

Does anybody have any sources inside Heritage Hall they could call or text to see what is going on? The suspense is killing all of us.

If anybody did (which I would love if they did ) probably would have made that call by now .

We got another o line commit today. Hoping the kid is great and plays lights out for us, but I do have to question he and his parents judgement. He is from Texas, so shouldn’t be a stay close to home or always dreamed of being at USC situation. Who signs at USC this week?

Maybe he knows something we don’t? If he knows Helton is staying, that’s scary. If knows Helton is out, why would he commit unless he knows who the coach is going to be? Either way, its a strange thing to commit on a day like this…

Some kids choose USC for the educational opportunities and the chances to make it to the NFL are good.

Am thinking of calling into Dan Dakich’s show on WFAN Indianapolis . (Which I listen to time to time )………. Why ?????? A few years ago I heard this from Bill Rabinowitz Ohio State football beat writer for the Dispatch ……..” When Meyer moved to Bowling Green, the house he bought sat behind Dakich’s and the families hit it off. The children became close friends… ( Dakich would come into the town where Urban Meyer had a house he was not using ) Meyer would be away for a couple days, but it didn’t stop him from offering Dakich the… Read more »

I somebody asked me if there was a person who knows the “Behind the scenes ” Stuff in Urban Meyers life ( other than Urbans family ) ? My first answers would probably be ……..Dan Dakich of WFAN INDY (and also does NCAA Basketball for ESPN I believe )

Still not believing anything coming out of anywhere. The pundits are going wild with their guesses as to who or what is happening. USC has a genuine experienced AD, just doing his due diligence and working hard. That is really new to us USC fans.

I am seeing the beginning of hints of just a little growing impatience on some USC beat writers twitter accounts.

So far today I have read that Franklin is done deal, Urban is done deal, and Helton staying. Ive got to stop reading and just wait, too much craziness.

Agree Rock. Franklin would not be that much more than a lateral move in terms of coaching abilities compared to Hugs.

So much action in college football today and nothing but crickets from SC. Hope there is some serious negotiations going on behind the scenes. I tend to think no news is good news. What with all the speculation about Helton, if he’s still their guy then just own it and announce it.

I imagine that is what is holding this thing up. Contract negotiations.

I agree that something is holding them back so it must be negotiations on a new coach and the timing of when they start.

I just heard from a reputable source that UM reached out to Rick Neuheisel asking if he wants to be his OC. Does anyone know Neuheisel that could reach out to him to confirm this?

That would be strange. Is Urban Meyer a fan of the Pistol?! Although stranger things have happened.

Agreed Rock. I don’t see the desired connection either. I hoping someone on this site knows Neuheisel and we can vet this.

One thing I know about The Weasel is that he is a notorious self-promoter. I wouldn’t be surprised if this rumor originated with The Weasel himself (whether or NOT it actually happened!).

Sounds about right on Neuheisel throwing a rumor out on himself.

Why you can’t tell ahead of time that something is going to happen UNTIL it actually does . After Boston College beat Pitt Head Coach Steve Addazio had a nice cheery conversation with Jarmond BC’s AD on the field after the game.. And when Boston Globe writers saw the video of it they got the impression that all is well and that BC’s AD and HC where VERY buddy buddy………… Yesterday Jarmond fired Addazio…….So it is very hard to get a judge sometimes on what is going on behind the scenes………FIGHT ON !!!!!

SC football was “dead” when it did not win a championship for nearly 30 years until 1962, or 28 years until Carroll in 2003. That is a long time between championships, and most Trojan fans had given them up for dead. But like seedlings in the desert, it only takes the next rain to bring them back to life. And so it has always been true with SC football, forever and a day.

LJ–see the teams in the 70’s 72, 74, 76, 78 79 pretty sure we finished in the top 3 or 4 in those years. A continued tradition of winning–not wandering in the desert like the stubborn Israelites. The guy from Arizona had a good team in ’88. Robinson 2.0 had a Rose Bowl Winner in ’95. I am sure I am missing for other good SC squads that more than held their own against the current group of good athletes, poorly coached squads from Hugs Helton. You’re off base, my friend. But Fight On just the same.

In the past, SC strived to to compete with the best. Prior to Swann, I cannot recall SC allowing a head coach clearly incapable of meeting that standard continue in his position. SC would make bad hires, but always sought to correct those mistakes when it became clear the coach was incapable of meeting the standard, until last year. The issue now is very clear. Clay Helton is simply incapable of competing with the Saban, the Meyers, etc. SC is completely irrelevant on the national scene. Clay has turned SC into a program on a par with Kansas State. Competitive… Read more »

It has been a crazy day that’s for sure. I finally had a chance to watch the video of the Ucla game. Until today I only knew the final score and a few numbers. Now I have seen again why people cannot stand the thought of Helton retaining his position. From the special teams aided Ucla first score, to the blown coverage that allowed the other scores, it was clear USC didn’t win as much they avoided losing. What other team in Division one football fails to put 11 players on the field for a field goal ? What other… Read more »

Certainly hope this is true. It seems to make sense that if Clay was to be retained, an announcement would have already been made.
