Fink Decides to Transfer

Redshirt junior QB Matt Fink is transferring and has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal, per ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura, who broke the news.

“It was a tough decision to say the least, but I think it’s best for myself to get the word out that I’m graduating and that I’m able to play for two years,” said Fink. “I’m looking for a school that fits me and is ready to get the ball rolling.”

Apparently, Fink could actually stay.  “I’m not fully committed to leaving,” he said. “It’s not like USC doesn’t fit me anymore. I just think there might be better opportunities. If there is something out there and it fits me well and they will take me in, that’s the place for me.”

I say it’s a good move for all. Fink gets a shot at being a starter somewhere and USC’s remaining QBs will get more reps when fall camp arrives.

Good for him. Finish your degree and get a nice 2 year gig at a school that needs a QB and has the right graduate program. I wish him luck wherever he goes. Maybe Western Kentucky could use him…

The odds of being the starting quarterback at SC are long. I know because that was my dream too. He didn’t burn any bridges by saying all the right things about Helton, whether he believed them or not, so he will still be welcomed at SC if the portal deal does not work out.

This makes great sense. He is not going to beat out JT or Jack Sears for PT and it looks like the true frosh Kedon Slovis also beat him out. Next year it is even worse with Young arriving. So, he has his undergraduate degree. His choice is see if he can play somewhere or stay at SC and get an advanced degree on SC. If he wants a law degree or an MBA degree and live in So.Cal., it makes sense to stay at SC for two more years, unless he has a chance to start somewhere OR unless… Read more »

From what I’ve put together Fink is a game quarterback as opposed to a practice quarterback. He needs the roar of the crowd to get enough adrenaline to shine.
He’s been described as inconsistent in practice. I have also heard he will languish in the portal because there aren’t many scholarships available.
However if someone wants an almost good enough quarterback, Funk is their man.

Wonder if his transferring is due to where he is on the depth chart. Wish Fink the best of luck.

Perhaps the writing was on the wall. Could be he wants to play for someone with an O line in front of him. I sure hope he lands in a good spot and finally gets the pt he deserves. I always thought Sears would be the one to transfer. JT will be the sacrificial lamb again for the O line in 2019, Sears will get to come in after they get JT hurt again. Hope the freshman will be up to speed as they may need him before season is over.

I’m right there with you Steveg in thinking Sears would be the one to transfer. I wish Matt Fink well and hope he ends up in a program that can benefit from his skills.
