Early Fall Camp Impressions

Quick Observer Feedback:

1) RB Stephen Carr looks ready, explosive and fully recovered from his back surgery.

2) Frosh RB Markese Stepp (6-0, 230) will be “a monster.”

3) QB Matt Fink has not been impressive. Jack Sears may beat out JT Daniels for the opening start. Sears is throwing much more accurately than he did in the spring.

4) The USC defense looks excellent and will be the team’s strength. Of course, the defense always performs better early.

5) Frosh LB Palaie Gaoteote (6-2, 250) is a fantastic hitter.

6) The physicality we have all been hoping for has returned to USC practices.

7) Clay Helton is “very animated and in the middle of everything at practice.”

8) Center Toa Lobendahn had better watch out for Brett Neilon who is having an excellent, superior camp. Frosh Justin Dedich is also looking good.

9) LT Austin Jackson looks excellent, super athletic and could be a starter this season. He has really “jumped out” on the O-line.

10) The return of coach Tim Drevno has bought back another very aggressive on-the-field presence to USC practices, the best since Ed Orgeron. Drevno can really get after players who he doesn’t think are performing. “It’s all about run-blocking with Drevno.”

Allen my prediction on Sears starting could come true. Glad to hear the young talent is starting to shine.

Has anyone checked the injury reports lately? A lot of players are out due to hampstring injuries, knees, etc… Now Palaie is out with a knee injury. Sounds similar to Porter. I get it, injuries happen, but 12 plus players in 1 week with soft tissue and muscle strains. What is up with the conditioning program?

Very excited with what I’m hearing especially the defense and the physicality in practices. I think this will make us that much tougher in the season. Football is a simple game of imposing your will on your opponent. Do that and dominate them in all phases of the game and you win. That is what SC used to be like under Pete Carroll and what we could be this season. As for the QB, I want the best player who gives us the best shot at winning to play. If that is Sears, then so be it. Putting a true… Read more »

Good to see it’s possible USC is addressing its toughness problem in the offensive trenches. This whole team’s progress hinges on a tougher, more athletic OL. Hope we get some encouraging reports about our OL, which has been sorely lacking for years. Just a simple 50% reduction in false starts would be a welcome development.

I’m hoping that Tim Drevno is being allowed to have the freedom to coach and impact that group. I remember the positive player responses towards him when he was here before.

This Saturday will be the first day to get a real judgement of the QB’s. The coaches have said they have seen good stuff from all three, with Sears showing the most. It ain’t over till the sweet fat lady sings but I am having a great time trying to be objective over three QB’s and have zero expectations. All three could be a starter, it is a shame only one will end up that way. Stephen Carr is going to carry the ground game I believe with the others being used in red zone and relief. What excites me… Read more »

I love the reference to Coach Drevno being the “Orgeron-type” prowling the practice field. That is something we have missed for a while. Physicality at practices–sounds great if true, but didn’t they just start contact today or yesterday? How much of a trend are the Observers really seeing? And, personally I am surprised at the report of Sears’ moon is rising faster than JT Daniels’ and that Fink is falling by the wayside. It’s early, but very interesting. Great information–something we probably would be seeing on last year’s blog, right?

I have only on worry at this time, a torn meniscus. I have heard everything from two to eight weeks recovery. I hope a lesson was learned last year and nobody will rush back into service before they are ready.

Allen are you going to practice or are you getting info from others? Who are they? Sounds very positive.

Thanks for the update. I am really interested in your points 8 and 10. On Point 8, I think a sign we are “back” on the OL is if a 5th year senior who has started for 3 years gets beat out for the UNLV game. I have heard on many talk shows that the kids know who the best players are. I would love it if Toa was forced to earn his position because he is the best, and we know that both Neilon and Dedich are the real deal. On Point 10, I really liked the Drevno hire… Read more »

Wow, this is all great news!! I’m especially excited about the points made about Carr, physical practices and Drevno. Also, I can’t say I’m too surprised to read that Jackson is doing great – the image of the huge #73 covering kicks says this young man is an athlete! Very high potential.

For fun let’s say Sears does win starting job.JT could still play 4 games and keep red shirt. Like everything said in points. What are the downsides? I remember last fall recievers, interceptions and big questions were abundant. All at the same time we were being picked for playoffs ,Heisman, top 5 and so on.
Personally I come into this season more excited, we have a chip on shoulder.

If Sears beats out JT, he’s no slouch. I can’t think of any downside to your idea. I too am very excited. There is a LOT of talent, and anytime you have a good defense you’ve got a shot.
