USC Trojans This & That — 8/19

Adam Maya (TrojanSports.com)  —  Fall Showcase Hangover

Clay Helton praised the QBs on the whole for not forcing throws and getting the ball out quick, and that was absolutely true on both accounts. But there were a few too many passes either underthrown, to the wrong spot or simply dropped. In other words, timing and chemistry is still lacking a bit. That’s expected when you’re rotating so many QBs and receivers. But less than two weeks out before the season, it’s probably past the time to have your core predominantly practicing together to perfect the playbook, no matter how simple it might be.

JT Daniels had a rather down week before the scrimmage, leading an operation that doesn’t look clean despite the fact that none of the players involved are new. Moreover, the sophomore still appears to really struggle when under pressure. That’s old hat for young quarterbacks. And yet it’s just more reason to give him more snaps. Of course, this point is null and void if Graham Harrell really doesn’t know if he wants to start Daniels. I just doubt that’s the case.

No need to pare down this competition to two guys and ride it out for even another week. Just give Daniels the work. Not so much because his performance Saturday was that convincing — granted, he was the best of an uneven bunch — but because he and the rest of the first-team offense need the shared reps.

This looks like more Heltonian idiocy at work. Slovis has the goods, but Helton makes every wrong decision a coach can make. If you are 5-star dual-threat QB Bryce Young committed to SC for the upcoming class, what are you making of this? Dual-threat QB Jack Sears who many observers thought might be named the starter, and was mostly a lock for no. 2 status if not, is listed as fourth/last on the depth chart. Almost certain to transfer now. Now Young has to worry that Slovis is the future of the program, and instead of coming in and waiting… Read more »

What I want to know is how can our QB’s look so bad when our DB’s are supposedly looking equally as bad? Somebody’s throwing to make the DB’s look bad.

The USC defense knows the offense by now. Everything boils down to execution against our own guys. If JT is still gun shy and afraid of the rush, USC is in deep trouble because that rush is not going to get any easier. I am still looking at the guy that instinctively can move in the pocket or escape it’s collapse. Until we have a good OL, I really feel Daniels is not the guy we need, feet of stone.

Ohio State and Oklahoma announced their starting QB’s today. When will Helton & Harrell annouce our starting QB?

Knowing Clay…. I’d say we get a starter announced by week 4.

How much gamesmanship does Clay really have in him? This is a perfect set up for the Fresno game. The media is barred from practice; so you “play the media”. Publicly you announce that the QB competition is still on and privately, inside the team, you choose (say) JT and tell the team that JT will get most of the 1st team reps and that Jack will get some as his back up. Thus, you force Fresno to prep for two QBs who are totally different. I would “play the media” until the Friday before the game, LATE Friday.

I would guess if Daniels wins the job, Fink and Sears will transfer asap, right? Also wondering with the QB tryouts such a focus, hopefully they just haven’t spent as much time on the run game. All the more reason to name the starter. Got to get the whole offense going here. next week is game week!

I think Sears would transfer. I think Fink has walked halfway across that bridge and decided not to cross it. I don’t think he changed his mind because he thought he would win the starting job.

I too think Fink will stay and I am actually surprised that Sears is not already gone. If we have to go with Daniels I am not expecting a lot.

I think Daniels already has the job locked up just given that he had twice the amount of reps on Saturday than the other three quarterbacks combined. When no one stands out you go with the guy who has the most experience. I don’t think that Sears will transfer if he is named the backup. JT might become a pinata again and then Sears will be next man up.

I think with less than two weeks Helton and Harrell need to decide who is the starter and give that person all the 1st team reps this week and next week so they are game ready for Fresno State. Don’t pick the starter based on who has the most experience but who has shown that they can lead the offense but with as few turnovers. If that is JT, then fine. If not, then go with whoever it is.

Yes, have to agree with post. They have to name a starter and backup today before it is too late. And give the starter the big majority of the reps.
It is a completely new system and reads. So it will take time for the starter and backup to fully learn it.
The season starts hard so don’t have the luxury of waiting.

Well that was more of a realistic report. If this report is true, then CH needs to name JT Daniels starting QB and get him a ton of reps with the 8-10 WRs so he can fine tune the rhythm and timing with these guys. At the very least, CH should make this a two horse race giving more reps to the guy(s) that will probably start. Anything less than one of these scenarios and we will have problems with the offense again this season. Will Helton learn from his past mistakes? We soon shall see.

He already has not or he would have named the starter a week ago. And Slovis would have been scaled back after the first week of Fall Camp.

Hoping all these reports are chicken / egg arguments.

Bad secondary = Good receivers and passing game.

Poor running game = Great front 7

Elevators without permits = luxurious stairs

Really interested in hearing about practice and the changes from last year, but really ready to move on to games. Name JT already, start getting he and the #2 guy the reps and let’s go.

I would go with Daniels, and do it now. Not that I believe he will ever be the second coming of Sam (sorry God), but he has got the experience. With this “new” heavy-passing system the boys exercising it need all the attention they can get.

No matter who they place as starter, the back up better be ready by the second quarter of the first game. The faithful few are not going to wait for results for very long.
I joked about making adjustments in game and I think I have a solution which might work. No matter who starts we automatically put the backup in for the second half. That would be a tremendous adjustment.

I remember when Coach Robinson and crew couldn’t decide on Kyle Wachholtz or Brad Otton, so he played both of them in games until Wachholtz was injured.

Same thing happened with Carson Palmer and Mike Van Raaphorst. Palmer was brought in for the second half of his first 8 games. The two quarterback thing never works well. That is why it is rarely done.

It is rare but SC had it in the 1962 National Championship team with Pete Beathard and Bill Nelson, so it’s not impossible.
